The capital city of Abeokuta is one of the popular cities in Nigeria. Long before Nigeria got her independence, Abeokuta always stood out as a city to be reckoned with in the country. Some of the relics and natural monuments from the past make for exciting tourist attractions today. We have identified some of the major places you may want to see in Abeokuta.

St. Peters Cathedral

This was the first church that the British Missionaries built in Nigeria when they came to Abeokuta.  The architecture of this church is still the way  the British built it. People come here for two purposes, to either see the religious monument or to seek out a place to worship at.

Alake Palace

The city of Abeokuta is filled with lots of preserved cultural monuments and heritage. One of such is the Alake Palace. This is where you are going to find a lot of antiquities and relics that are significant to the Yoruba people. People come here to get a sense of what it was like in the ancient days.

Itoku Market

The tie and dye trade is monumental here, with a large turn out of the famous adire fabric being somewhat of a cultural product. A visit to the Itoku Market will open you up to find hundreds of traders and customers haggling over the prices of these clothes in the market.

Olumo Rock

Olumo Rock is a popular landmark in Nigeria that once provided sanctuary for the natives here. It was also used as a vantage spot to see the enemies before their arrival into the ancient city of Abeokuta years back.  This rock was one of the pillars that helped the people here conquer some tribes during tribal wars many, many years ago.
